At approximately 11 a.m., Grande Prairie RCMP responded to a domestic dispute in progress in a northwest community of Grande Prairie. A 42-year-old man held a woman in her residence at gunpoint. The man had assaulted the woman causing injury and had discharged his firearm inside the residence.

Several RCMP officers arrived and surrounded the residence. Officers gained entry to the home where they interacted with the man. During the interaction, police were able to remove the woman and take her to safety.

An interaction occurred between the man and police at an entry point to the home at which time officers discharged their firearms in the man’s direction. Police then placed the man under arrest and paramedics immediately provided first aid for his gunshot-related wounds. The man was transported to a nearby hospital to receive additional medical care where he was charged with several criminal offences and remanded.

The injured woman was taken to hospital for treatment and released. No officers or other members of the public were injured.

During examination of the scene, a firearm was located inside the residence.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by the officers. No additional information will be released at this time.
