At 8:33 p.m., the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) received a 911 call reporting a man walking around brandishing a knife and approaching civilians in the area of 112 Street and 100 Avenue.

At approximately 8:39 p.m., police arrived on scene. The man approached the police with a knife and an altercation ensued between officers and the man. Police used a conducted energy weapon and a physical altercation ensued. One of the officers discharged their firearm, striking the man. Police and paramedics provided medical treatment, but the man died at the scene.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by the officers. No additional information will be released.

As part of its ongoing investigation, ASIRT is continuing efforts to identify people who may have witnessed aspects of the confrontation between the man and police. ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and/or may have video to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
