At approximately 4:05 p.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to multiple calls about a man with a firearm in the area of Beaconwood Place in Fort McMurray. A 33-year-old man approached a woman at her residence and shot her, causing serious injuries. The man fired several more shots at nearby vehicles and homes before driving a short distance away in his vehicle.

RCMP officers arrived and contained the area. An interaction took place between officers and the man, resulting in officers firing their guns at the man. Officers removed the man from his vehicle and began first aid before paramedics took over. The man died at the scene. The injured female victim was taken to a local hospital and has since been released. No officers were injured.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine use of force by the officers. No additional information will be released.

As part of its ongoing investigation, ASIRT is continuing efforts to identify people who may have witnessed aspects of the confrontation between the man and police. ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and/or may have video to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
