Starting April 18 and running for one year, Alberta’s government has established a temporary one-year driver’s licence exchange program all holders of a Ukrainian Category B (passenger vehicles) or BE (passenger vehicles with a trailer) driver’s licence.

The implementation of the one-year driver’s licence exchange program in Alberta will enable more Ukrainian evacuees to receive their licences to help them seek meaningful employment and care for their families.

“We’re helping Ukrainian evacuees exchange their licence so they can integrate easier into Alberta - to help them get new jobs and a fresh start. This change demonstrates Alberta’s commitment and compassion to the people of Ukraine.”

Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors

“My ministry and our registry agent partners are proud to support Ukrainian newcomers as they settle into their new communities. This simple measure will make their transition easier while helping to maintain road safety for all Albertans.”

Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction

“Establishing a driver’s licence exchange program is an additional support for the Ukraine evacuees that demonstrates Alberta’s commitment and compassion to the long-standing relationship with the people of Ukraine. I am proud that Alberta has joined other Canadian jurisdictions in assisting evacuees by exchanging Ukrainian Category B and BE driver’s licences for Class 5 passenger driver’s licences.”

Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, parliamentary secretary for Ukrainian Refugee Settlement

“We are grateful to the Government of Alberta for making the process of obtaining an Alberta driver's licence easier for Ukrainians. It is very important for Ukrainians coming here to Alberta to get a job as soon as possible, to obtain means of living, and without a driver's licence sometimes it is very difficult or even impossible. Thus, this decision by the Government of Alberta will greatly help Ukrainians establish themselves in the province and become an active and productive part of the local society. Thank you for standing with Ukraine and supporting the Ukrainian people.”

Oleksandr Danyleiko, Consul General of Ukraine in Edmonton

Exchanging licences is an additional support for Ukrainian evacuees that demonstrates Alberta’s commitment and compassion to the longstanding relationship with the people of Ukraine.
