At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 24, a lone member of the RCMP was conducting a traffic stop on a cooperative motorist in the Town of Canmore. During this traffic stop, the RCMP member observed an approaching vehicle do a U-turn to avoid passing the area of the traffic stop.

The RCMP member began pursuing this vehicle, whose driver twice fired upon him, damaging the RCMP vehicle’s windshield. The RCMP member continued to follow the suspect vehicle into a cul-de-sac, where it became stuck in the snow.

The RCMP member fired upon the suspect vehicle, at which time the driver left the vehicle and fled into a wooded area. A short time later, the driver was located and was transported to hospital for treatment of gunshot injuries.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by the officer. No additional information will be released.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
