History:

Description: Alberta Emergency Alert- River Ice Advisory for Breakup.

With the onset of warmer spring temperatures, Alberta Environment and Parks has issued a River Ice Advisory in advance of breakup on the Peace River at the Town of Peace River. The movement of the ice may result in the formation of ice jams and rapidly changing water levels.

A ground observation located the Peace River ice front at km 382.6 on March 11 at 16:30 MST. This location is near the Peace River Correctional Centre, and 13.4 km upstream of the Town of Peace River. Given the above seasonal temperatures this winter and spring, the ice cover is receding and deteriorating much earlier than average. Based on this observation and the current weather forecast, the ice front is expected to melt and recede through the Town of Peace River early next week.
