Starting this weekend, Albertans will no longer need to change their clocks twice a year as the province moves to permanent daylight time, known as Alberta Time (ABT). That means no more turning the clocks back in November or moving them forward in March. Albertans will now have one consistent time throughout the year.
“Albertans are tired of changing their clocks twice a year. Permanent daylight time means more evening sunshine to enjoy with family and friends, while keeping us aligned with our western neighbours and making everyday life a little simpler.”
Permanent daylight time also avoids extremely early summer sunrises, which could occur as early as 4 a.m. in some Alberta communities under permanent standard time.
Technology providers have been very aware of the transition to Alberta Time and Alberta’s government has worked very closely with them for months. While most smartphones, computers, tablets and other connected devices are expected to update automatically, provided they have current software and automatic time-zone settings enabled, there may be some systems that do not update seamlessly. The province will continue to encourage technology providers to provide updates.
Albertans are encouraged to ensure their devices have the latest software updates installed and automatic time-zone settings enabled before Nov. 1. Some older or unsupported devices may need to be updated or adjusted manually.
