As the fall legislative sitting begins, Alberta’s government plans to introduce legislation that addresses affordability, health care, education and the economy. Protecting Albertans and the province will remain a priority, with measures to safeguard children, vulnerable Albertans, property owners, consumers and natural resources. The fall agenda will deliver practical changes to help families keep more of their hard-earned money, strengthen accountability and ensure Alberta remains the best place to live, work and raise a family.

“Alberta continues to move forward as a leader ready to take on the challenges that face us today. This legislative agenda will address several of the issues that are top of mind for Albertans such as building a strong economy, health care, affordability and education. Earlier this week, we received an overwhelming mandate from Albertans to strengthen Alberta within Canada, and that is exactly what this government is doing.”

Joseph Schow, Government House Leader and Minister of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration

Making life more affordable

Alberta leads the nation with the highest average weekly earnings, but still too many families are feeling financial pressure. Proposed legislation will help lower the cost of auto insurance. Legislation is also planned to increase protection of utility bills.

Strengthening protections for Albertans

Protecting Albertans, their rights, property and personal information will be a major focus of the fall sitting.

Proposed legislation includes:

  • Increasing confidence in public-sector hiring by ensuring decisions are based on merit.
  • Stronger protections for data centre development.
  • Increased penalties for illegal dumping, including significant fines and potential jail time.
  • Consumer protections for resale event tickets.
  • Consumer protections for defective vehicles.
  • Parental notification requirements for incidents at licensed child-care facilities, as well as increased government oversight on the licensing and certification process.
  • Building roadways that balance safety, mobility and the needs of communities with clear authority around bike lanes.
  • Protecting Albertans from non-consensual distribution or threat of distribution of digitally altered intimate content.
  • Harsher consequences for unsafe driving.
  • Increased accountability for commercial truck drivers.
  • Protecting freedom of expression at post-secondary institutions.
  • Updating language related to child sexual exploitation to ensure legislation reflects today’s risks.
  • Stronger safeguards to protect Albertans’ personal information.

Improving health care and supporting vulnerable Albertans

Alberta’s government plans to introduce legislation that increases protection for vulnerable people and improves coordination across the health care system. Amendments to the Compassionate Intervention Act will prepare for a successful launch in 2027. This program will enable life-saving addiction treatment for those with such severe addiction that they pose a danger to themselves or others. Additional changes will improve coordination between health agencies and support more seamless access to mental health services.

Supporting students and strengthening education

With Alberta's student population growing by more than 90,000 students over four years, the government is taking further action to ensure the education system keeps pace with the needs of students and families. Proposed legislation will strengthen provincial oversight, improve transparency and accountability, and work to establish consistent standards for student report cards. These changes build on a record $10.8-billion investment in education this year, an increase of more than seven per cent over last year, to hire more teachers, expand in-class support teams and create more classrooms through new schools and modular spaces.

Building a stronger Alberta

As the fall sitting gets underway, Alberta’s government will continue taking action on the priorities Albertans have identified while defending the province's interests and building opportunities for future generations.
