Alberta’s government is investing $12.5 million through the Alberta Surgical Initiative to renovate and upgrade Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital. The improvements will increase surgical capacity by nearly 50 per cent, supporting more than 3,000 additional procedures each year and helping more patients get the care they need close to home.

Renovations will begin in the coming weeks, with the upgraded spaces anticipated to be fully operational by 2029. The hospital will remain operational throughout the renovations, with surgeries continuing and work carefully phased to minimize disruptions to patients and care.

“Through the Alberta Surgical Initiative, we’re building the surgical capacity Alberta needs for the future. These renovations will put that work into action in Fort Saskatchewan, supporting thousands more procedures each year and helping patients get the care they need when and where they need it.”

Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services

“Alberta’s government is making strategic investments to ensure Alberta’s health infrastructure keeps pace with growing communities. These renovations will strengthen the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital and support the delivery of care for years to come.”

Martin Long, Minister of Infrastructure

Fort Saskatchewan and surrounding communities are rapidly growing, increasing demand for surgeries and other health services. These renovations will significantly expand the hospital’s surgical capacity, allowing it to care for more patients while modernizing key spaces to meet the community’s needs into the future.

“As Fort Saskatchewan and the surrounding region continue to grow, so does the need for high-quality health care close to home. These upgrades will allow more local residents to receive surgery in their own community, reducing wait times and helping families access the care they need without having to travel elsewhere for treatment.”

Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville

The Alberta Surgical Initiative is a $284 million investment over three years to renovate operating rooms, upgrade surgical infrastructure and purchase new equipment in hospitals across the province. The initiative is improving the surgical journey for Albertans, from referral through recovery, helping reduce wait times and make the most of surgical resources.
