Artis Exploration Ltd., as an employer, pleaded guilty on Oct. 1 in the Red Deer Court of Justice to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code related to hazard assessment and control. All remaining charges were withdrawn.
The sentence stems from an incident that occurred on May 10, 2024, on an oil battery site in Kneehill County. One worker was seriously injured following an explosion and fire.
The court fined the company $114,000 including the victim fine surcharge.
The company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalty.
Synergy Well Servicing Ltd., as an employer, is charged with four counts under OHS laws related to the same incident. The company has a hearing scheduled for Nov. 18 in the Red Deer Court of Justice.
Alberta’s OHS laws set basic health and safety rules for workplaces across the province. They provide guidance for employers to help them ensure their workplaces are as healthy and safe as possible while providing rights and protections for workers. Charges under OHS laws may be laid when failing to follow the rules results in a fatality or serious injury.
