As global demand for AI computing continues to grow, Alberta’s competitive tax environment, abundant natural gas and skilled workforce position the province as a premier destination in North America for private data centre investment. By establishing clear rules, environmental requirements and grid-protection policies ahead of development, Alberta is ensuring that major private investments in AI data centres deliver substantial benefits for Albertans and protect the things that matter: power bills, water, land, the environment and communities.

Alberta’s approach to AI data centres rests on four commitments: Albertans will not pay for these projects, the grid comes first, water use is tightly controlled and Albertans share in the financial upside through municipal tax revenues, royalties and a data centre computing equipment levy.

The new website explains what data centres are, why they are being built here, the opportunities they create, how Alberta’s approach differs from other jurisdictions and the safeguards that protect Alberta’s electricity system, water resources, communities and taxpayers. Each answer links to public sources so people can review the information directly.

How to have your say

Albertans have opportunities to provide input. The website explains how residents can participate in municipal discussions, provide input to regulators, and file a statement of concern. Albertans are invited to attend the following town halls on AI data centres in the province:
