Albertans and visitors travelling into the province will soon be greeted by a new generation of Welcome to Alberta border signs that proudly reflect Alberta’s identity as a province that is strong, free and full of opportunity.

“Our new Welcome to Alberta border signs are proudly branded with our Strong and Free motto. Whether people are travelling from our Rocky Mountains, beautiful forests or our fertile agricultural lands, these signs will greet visitors and welcome Albertans home.”

Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors

For more than 40 years, Alberta’s iconic border signs have welcomed travellers entering the province from every direction. After decades of exposure to Alberta’s harsh weather conditions, the existing signs have reached the end of their usable lifespan. Alberta’s government is now moving forward with a refreshed design that is more durable and built to withstand Alberta’s climate for decades to come. The new signs will also include updated provincial branding and Alberta’s Strong and Free motto.

Alberta’s government recently issued a request for proposal for a fabricator to build a total of 22 signs to be installed at provincial border crossings. Installation of the new signs is expected to begin by fall 2026.

Quick facts

  • Signs will be located along major highway corridors at provincial border entry points within British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Montana (USA) and the Northwest Territories.
  • The cost to replace the 22 border signs is about $3.5 million.
