Since 2019, Alberta has cut more than 220,000 regulatory burdens, saving Albertans and businesses over $3 billion. Proposed amendments in Bill 31, the Red Tape Reduction Statutes Amendment Act, 2026, would build on that momentum.
The bill would amend 18 pieces of legislation across eight ministries to streamline processes and improve services. If passed, it would end seasonal clock changes by moving Alberta to permanent, year-round Mountain Daylight Time, modernize parks legislation to strengthen conservation and visitor experience, and expand irrigation limits so more farmland can be irrigated without increasing water use.

Additional changes in the Red Tape Reduction Statutes Amendment Act, 2026, include:
- Removing the monetary limit on adjudication for public works projects, paving the way for construction disputes to be resolved quickly.
- Streamlining the process for adding new materials to provincial recycling programs, and to designate materials banned from landfill disposal.
- Allowing irrigation districts to advertise meetings on their websites and communicate by email or mail, saving time, reducing costs and improving service for Albertans.
- Making iGaming advertising rules easier for industry to understand by clarifying that iGaming advertising rules can be set through AGLC standards in addition to the regulation.
Alberta continues to lead the country in cutting red tape, earning the Canadian Federation of Independent Business’s 2026 Golden Scissors Award for its Automatic Yes initiative, which streamlines permitting and improves approvals.
