The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) is partnering with the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) to ensure all iGaming sites in Alberta complete a mandatory social responsibility accreditation program called Responsible Gambling check (RG Check).

The partnership builds on the province’s actions to establish a safer, more responsible online gaming market where player protection and social responsibility are at the forefront. Assessing sites against internationally recognized responsible gambling standards will help ensure Albertans have the best protections possible.

“Strong safeguards and social responsibility measures will define Alberta’s iGaming market. Through this partnership, we are raising the bar on player protection by ensuring that operators make social responsibility the centrepiece of their operations.”

Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction

“As we raise the bar in promoting safety in iGaming, it is refreshing to see a focus on the harms gambling can bring. It’s great to see a dedicated avenue to address these concerns. Mental Health and Addiction will continue working to support those facing any form of addiction.”

Rick Wilson, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction

In addition to mandatory RG Check accreditation, sites must ensure advertising does not target minors or feature professional athletes promoting gambling activities. At market launch, player protection measures will include system-wide self-exclusion, financial and time-based limit tools, and access to gaming activity statements. Sites will also be required to monitor for signs of problematic gambling behaviour and intervene when necessary.

“Alberta is committed to building a safer, regulated iGaming environment where player protection comes first. By requiring RG Check accreditation, we're ensuring that every iGaming operator in our market has demonstrated their commitment to player safety through independent verification of their responsible gambling programs.”

Dan Keene, interim CEO, Alberta iGaming Corporation

“The Responsible Gambling Council will conduct assessments based on internationally recognized responsible gambling standards. We are excited that Alberta is building on a strong foundation established in Ontario, where RG Check has proven its value in creating safer gambling environments.”

Sarah McCarthy, CEO, Responsible Gambling Council

For sites that currently hold RG Check accreditation, the transition to Alberta will be streamlined. Sites will benefit from an efficient onboarding process that recognizes their existing accreditation status, reducing both administrative burden and costs, and allowing them to focus on ensuring Albertans are protected.
