“Today, we solemnly commemorate Holodomor Memorial Day and pay tribute to the millions of lives lost during one of the darkest chapters in Ukrainian history.

“From 1932 to 1933, under the brutal policies of Joseph Stalin and the authoritarian communist regime of the former Soviet Union, Ukrainian farmers were stripped of their harvests. Grain was confiscated, even when it meant leaving families without food, and export quotas were prioritized over domestic survival. These deliberate actions lead to a man-made famine that devastated families, communities and the cultural fabric of Ukraine.

“As we mark this solemn occasion in 2025, the echoes of history are painfully present. Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine reminds us of the enduring resilience of the Ukrainian people and the importance of standing united against unjust aggression.

“Let us come together as Albertans to honour the victims of the Holodomor, reflect on our shared history and recognize that the resilience of the Ukrainian people continues to shine in their pursuit of peace and sovereignty.”
