“Diwali is a time of joy, reflection and togetherness for thousands of people living in Alberta. Celebrated across Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism and Buddhism, the festival of lights honours the victory of light over darkness and the enduring power of dharma: righteousness, compassion and moral duty.

“As homes, temples and workplaces glow with diyas (oil lamps), candles and lanterns, families gather to share festive meals, exchange mithai (sweets) and enjoy fireworks that light up the night sky. Colourful rangoli designs and jhalars (coloured fabrics) add to the vibrant spirit of the season.

“For Sikhs, Diwali also marks Bandi Chhor Divas, the Day of Liberation, commemorating Guru Hargobind Ji’s release and his commitment to justice and freedom.

“Diwali is a celebration of hope, resilience and community. I extend my warmest wishes to everyone celebrating and may your Diwali be filled with light, happiness and prosperity. Shubh Deepavali!”
