“Almost seven months ago, the order was given to evacuate Jasper under threat of a devastating wildfire. Since then, we’ve seen example after example of the unwavering resilience and fortitude of the community as it rebuilds. The strength of Jasper’s community, with its residents working hand-in-hand to rebuild, makes this town exceptional. Their perseverance and sense of unity makes me proud to be an Albertan.

“While many residents have returned to their homes, some have tragically lost their residences and remain displaced. Regardless of their circumstances, it is critical that all residents who call Jasper home have the opportunity to participate in their local democracy.

“For the upcoming fall 2025 municipal election, I want to reassure all Jasper residents temporarily displaced due to the wildfire that they will be fully eligible to vote and run for office, either for a seat on town council or for their local school board.

"To make sure this right is upheld, we will be proposing amendments to the Local Authorities Election Act later this spring. These amendments will ensure displaced Jasper residents retain their residency and eligibility to vote and campaign for office in Jasper, as long as they were eligible to do so immediately before the wildfire, they intend to return to live in the community, and they are not disqualified for reasons due to events following the wildfire not related to residency.

“As we look forward to October, I encourage any temporarily displaced Jasper residents who are interested in running for Jasper town council or the school board to do so, even if they are currently living outside of town. Local voices are crucial in shaping the future of Jasper, and we want to ensure the right to participate remains intact, regardless of temporary circumstances.

“We are committed to strengthening democracy in Alberta and making sure Albertans have a voice when it comes to matters that affect their communities. We are committed to making sure that this remains the case for Jasper.

“Thank you for your patience, your resilience and your unwavering commitment to Jasper’s future.”
