"Today marks a historic step forward for Calgary commuters. Alberta’s government is pleased that Calgary City Council has voted to proceed with a better Green Line alignment that will add five more stations, is 76 per cent longer, and will serve 60 per cent more Calgarians.
“This new elevated alignment will save more than $1 billion compared with tunnelling downtown, allowing those savings to be reinvested into the project to extend the line further south to Shepard.
“By increasing ridership and expanding access, we are ensuring that taxpayer dollars deliver maximum value while building a stronger, more connected city.
“We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the City of Calgary and working with the federal government to finalize the updated business case. With this decision, we are ready to move forward and get shovels in the ground as early as this spring.
“This is a win for Calgary, for Alberta, and for the future of public transit in our province.”

"C’est un jour historique pour les usagers des transports en commun de Calgary. Le gouvernement de l’Alberta est heureux que le conseil municipal de Calgary ait voté en faveur du projet d’amélioration du tracé de la ligne verte, qui prévoit un allongement de 76% et cinq stations supplémentaires, permettant ainsi de desservir 60 % de Calgariens de plus
"Ce nouveau tracé surélevé permettra d’économiser plus d’un milliard de dollars par rapport au creusement d’un tunnel au centre-ville. Ces économies pourront être réinvesties dans le projet afin de prolonger la ligne plus au sud, jusqu’à Shepard.
"En augmentant le nombre d’usagers et en facilitant l’accès au transport en commun, nous garantissons un usage optimal des fonds publics, contribuant ainsi à bâtir une ville plus forte et mieux connectée.
"Nous allons maintenant poursuivre notre collaboration avec la Ville de Calgary et travailler avec le gouvernement fédéral afin de finaliser le plan d’affaires mis à jour. Grâce à cette décision, nous sommes fin prêts à entamer les travaux dès ce printemps.
"Cela constitue une belle victoire pour Calgary, pour l’Alberta et pour l’avenir du transport en commun dans notre province."
