“This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the end of the Holocaust, one of the darkest chapters in human history. Beginning with Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in 1933, the Holocaust resulted in the targeted deaths of six million Jews at the hands of the Nazis. It ended with the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp on this day in 1945.
“Recognizing these events as among the most heinous crimes ever committed is essential to ensuring their memory is not lost. We also pay tribute to Holocaust survivors who courageously share their stories, reminding us that understanding the past is the only way to safeguard the future.
“On Oct. 7, 2023, the Jewish community in Israel was targeted in the largest attack against Jews since the Holocaust. In the 15 months since that attack, antisemitism has risen around the world.
"This is a reminder that the post-war vow of 'Never Again' must guide our actions as we reject antisemitism and all forms of discrimination. Educating future generations about the devastating consequences of hatred, intolerance and prejudice remains our shared responsibility.
"In Alberta, there is no place for antisemitism or bigotry of any kind. The enduring message of ‘Never Again’ must be as resolute today as it was 80 years ago.”
