The province is committed to ensuring Albertans have access to the housing they need. Budget 2023 included $94 million over three years for capital maintenance and renewal funding and this investment is in addition to that amount.
Alberta’s government has worked with housing providers across the province to identify affordable housing projects that require renovation and preventative maintenance. Through an additional $16 million in capital maintenance and renewal funding, 100 units will reopen and another 300 will continue to be available for use while undergoing preventative maintenance.
“This investment will support housing providers to keep affordable housing online across our province. We will continue to partner with these organizations to ensure we maintain and grow our affordable housing infrastructure across Alberta.”
Funding will be provided to 30 housing providers across Alberta that operate government-owned affordable housing units. Alberta’s funding for capital repair and maintenance is eligible for cost-matching from the federal government under the National Housing Strategy bilateral agreement. The funding will be made available for units in need of repair and maintenance projects, including replacing windows, repairing roofs and improving interior environments, to help bring units up to date and ensure they can continue to be used for years to come.
“Civida is very grateful for the much-needed investment into capital maintenance and renewal of affordable homes in our community. The funding represents a major step towards ensuring that thousands of families and individuals can continue to have access to safe, updated, affordable places to live. This infusion not only contributes towards addressing growing housing needs but will also breathe new life into communities, improving the well-being of those who live in these homes.”
“The capital maintenance and renewal funding announced by Alberta’s government is vitally important for not-for-profit housing management bodies like Bethany Care Society. It helps us provide building infrastructure and capital improvements for the tenants we are proud to serve through our mission of creating caring communities.”
Since 2019, Alberta’s government has completed 2,808 affordable housing units and 350 new shelter spaces totalling $517.8 million across 46 projects.
