“I am pleased to declare Oct. 15 a special day in honour of the Edmonton Short Film Festival’s 10th anniversary. For the past decade, the festival has supported Edmonton’s young and seasoned filmmakers with its classes, workshops and competitions.

“Every year, Alberta filmmakers are encouraged to submit films under 15 minutes to be shown at the festival. By participating, every entrant develops their skills, builds their reputation and connects with an expanded audience.

“The short nature of these projects requires filmmakers to sharpen and refine their vision to crystalize their message. Telling a complete story with a beginning, middle and end in only 15 minutes is a challenge for any filmmaker, regardless of experience. It is an opportunity that gives budding filmmakers a completed project to be proud of, and challenges more experienced filmmakers to be original while revisiting the basics.

“Alberta has a proud history of films being made in our own backyard, from blockbusters to award-winning pictures that stretch the envelope of creativity, imagination and artistic vision. Thank you to the Edmonton Short Film Festival for promoting short film creation and making it possible for filmmakers to learn and experiment right here in Alberta.

“Congratulations on reaching this milestone. I wish the festival another 10 successful years.”
