“Today, Ukrainians around the world celebrate the independence of their homeland. In the wake of Russia’s criminal invasion, this year’s anniversary is especially meaningful.

“After enduring centuries of subjugation, including periods of Communist tyranny and forced starvation, Ukrainians are again fighting to be free from Russian aggression. They refuse to give up, even in the ruins of their cities and despite hundreds of casualties per day. Their bravery is an inspiration to us all.

“Alberta stands with Ukraine by donating $13 million for humanitarian aid and by providing evacuees with supports so they can learn English, manage living expenses, find work and access child care. We won’t turn away from Ukraine or its people, no matter how long the war lasts.

“I wish all Ukrainians the strength to get through dark times, as they have before.”
