“Alberta’s lakes, reservoirs, rivers and streams provide a diverse range of angling and fish harvest opportunities. With so many unique angling experiences available across the province, it’s no wonder fishing is so beloved by Albertans of all ages.
“National Fishing Week encourages Canadians to get outdoors and enjoy our angling heritage, and there’s no better place to do that than right here in Alberta.
“Marking the start of National Fishing Week is Alberta’s Family Fishing Weekend. On July 2 and 3, no licence is required and you can fish for free anywhere in Alberta, except for national parks.
“Fishing is fun for the whole family and Alberta’s Family Fishing Weekend offers an affordable way to enjoy our province’s many spectacular outdoor spaces. If it’s been a while since your last catch or if you’ve never tried fishing, there’s no better time than this weekend to discover the lure of fishing.
“Whether you are looking to reel in a walleye, rainbow trout, tiger trout or any one of the dozens of fish species that live in our waters, a successful fishing trip is more likely than ever thanks to Alberta’s provincial stocking program. This year, nearly four million wild walleye fry hatched at the Cold Lake Fish Hatchery were stocked into 16 lakes and reservoirs to create future walleye angling opportunities, while more than two million hatchery-reared trout of a catchable size were stocked into more than 240 lakes.
“While you don’t need a licence to fish this weekend, all sport fishing rules and regulations still apply. Be sure to ‘know before you go.’ When planning your fishing trip, start with MyWildAlberta.ca. Click on the fishing tab and find helpful resources, including Alberta’s 2022 sport fishing regulations, fishing advisories as well as fish handling tips and a list of stocked waterbodies.
“We all deserve a little break and I hope free fishing this weekend gives Alberta families another way to enjoy our beautiful landscape and diverse and healthy fisheries. I wish everyone a safe, fun and successful fishing adventure.”
