"April 7 is Green Shirt Day, a day commemorated by many Albertans.

“On April 6, 2018, 16 people died and 13 were seriously injured when a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos hockey team collided with a semi-trailer in Saskatchewan. Many lives changed that day, including those of Toby and Bernie Boulet, parents of 21-year-old defenceman Logan Boulet.

“On April 7, 2018, Logan, from Lethbridge, succumbed to his injuries and became an organ and tissue donor.

“Only weeks before his tragic death, Logan had shared his wish to become an organ and tissue donor with his parents. His coach and mentor Ric Suggit, who had become a donor after passing away less than a year before, was Logan’s inspiration.

“Amid unspeakable pain and loss, Logan’s parents honoured his wish and his organs saved the lives of six people – six strangers who would have more time with their loved ones.

“Logan’s story inspired Albertans and people around the world. In the month after his passing, tens of thousands of people registered their consent to become organ and tissue donors.

“Today, I ask all Albertans to honour Logan Boulet’s legacy by recognizing Green Shirt Day. Wear a green shirt today to honour all the victims and families of that fatal crash. Most importantly, have that difficult but significant conversation about becoming an organ and tissue donor with your family. Register your wishes online at the Alberta Organ and Tissue Donation Registry or with a registry agent.

“Your gift could save lives.”
