This release was issued under a previous government.

“I was asked to meet with public sector union leaders to discuss the government’s financial and labour relations intentions, and I am pleased to do so, and will convene a meeting within the next 10 days.

“I look forward to discussing Alberta’s fiscal situation, our evolving labour strategy, and how the public sector can be a partner in ensuring fairness for both workers and taxpayers.

“Alberta is facing a significant fiscal challenge. In the coming year, we are looking at a $7 billion revenue shortfall, with continued shortfalls in the years after that. Alberta has benefited from high revenues and low taxes, and used resource revenues to cover the difference. That is no longer sustainable.

“Some would have us spend our way to prosperity, while others would have us cut our way there. My government will take a responsible, balanced approach, and we will work with Albertans to implement it. We are all in this together, and our union leaders need to be part of the solution. I look forward to the discussion.”
