This release was issued under a previous government.

“We want every child to have the best possible start in life and the opportunity to achieve success regardless of where in the province they grow up. Our government is committed to building Alberta and that commitment isn't just about physical infrastructure. Building Alberta is also about ensuring we have strong communities and a bright future for our children.” said Human Services Minister Dave Hancock. “The recently passed Children First Act was an important first step in the process of transforming how government supports the well-being and success of Alberta’s children. Today marks the next steps in addressing social issues that affect children and I encourage all Albertans to join in the conversation.”

Led by the department of Human Services, the engagement will look into specific areas, such as the early years in a child’s life, in an effort to ensure all children are able to have the opportunity to succeed regardless of their family’s personal and financial situation. Human Services will also lead a review of all policies, programs and services across government that impact children and is expected to provide a report to the Alberta Legislature.

Participants will be invited to share their thoughts about eliminating child poverty; helping pre-school children to reach their full potential; and ensuring that governments and communities have the right tools and processes in place to support young Albertans. Starting June 19, and continuing through the summer, Albertans will be encouraged to participate in conversations online at socialpolicy.alberta.ca and in communities across the province.

"Recognizing that children come first and must be our central focus in delivering programs and services, the establishment of a ‘Children’s Charter’ will identify the greater community as having a shared responsibility for the well-being, safety, security, education and health of children." said Joan Carr, Superintendent at Edmonton Catholic Schools.  "We know that early intervention and prevention are fundamental in addressing social challenges affecting children and the Children First Act will support collaboration amongst agencies and provide the opportunity for shared research as well. Our children and their families are precious gifts to society and the future!”

The Children's Charter will further focus the values and principles of Alberta's Social Policy Framework.  The Charter will establish the principles, priorities and roles and responsibilities specifically for Alberta children.  It will promote a longer-term discussion about supports for children and families, breaking down barriers and helping to create positive outcomes for children.

The focused work on issues affecting children aligns directly with the goals Albertans identified under the Social Policy Framework: reduce inequality; protect vulnerable people; enable collaboration and partnerships; and, create a person-centred system of high quality services.

Our government was elected to keep building Alberta, to live within its means and to fight to open new markets for Alberta’s resources. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
