Judge Jerry LeGrandeur has been appointed to the Southern Region of Provincial Court, effective September 12. Judge LeGrandeur will replace Assistant Chief Judge Eric Peterson.

Judge James Ogle has been appointed to the Calgary Criminal and the Calgary Region of Provincial Court, starting September 16. Judge Ogle will replace Acting Assistant Chief Judge Robert Wilkins.

Judge L. Diane Young has been appointed to the Provincial Court’s Civil Division beginning September 12. Judge Young will replace Assistant Chief Judge Norman Hess.

“I congratulate the judges on their appointments, and look forward to their continued leadership and service to Albertans,” said Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. “All of these appointees have strong credentials and a history of taking a common sense approach to justice.”

“I want to thank judges Peterson, Wilkins and Hess for the excellent service they provided to Albertans during their time as Assistant Chief Judges,” said Denis. “They played an important role in keeping Alberta’s communities safe and providing justice for countless Albertans.”

All three appointments are five year terms.

Appointees’ biographies

Judge Jerry N. LeGrandeur
Jerry N. LeGrandeur graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Law in 1974. After being admitted to the bar in 1975 he practiced law in Lethbridge. As an involved member of his community, he has served on a number of committees with the University of Lethbridge including the Board of Governors. Judge LeGrandeur was appointed to the Provincial Court in May, 1990.

Judge James J. Ogle
James J Ogle graduated from the University of Alberta law school in 1974. His law practice was focused primarily on criminal law and he successfully argued cases at all levels of court including the Supreme Court of Canada. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1992. Judge Ogle was appointed to the Provincial Court in May 2006. In 2007 he opened the Calgary Drug Treatment Court and currently serves as lead judge of that court.

Judge L. Diane Young
L. Diane Young graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta in 1984. Judge Young was appointed to the Provincial Court in 2009. Prior to her appointment, Judge Young was in private practice in Edmonton and at the time of her appointment, was President of the Canadian Bar Association, Alberta Branch.
