Judge Gardner will take over from the current Assistant Chief Judge Daniel R. Pahl effective May 30.

Judge Gardner was appointed to the Edmonton Region Provincial Court in 2010. He graduated law school from the University of Alberta in 1978. Prior to his judicial appointment, he gained extensive experience working in both criminal and civil litigation. His term as Assistant Chief Judge is for five years.

“I welcome Judge Gardner to the position of Assistant Chief Judge.  His leadership and experience in Provincial Court will be an asset and I am certain he will serve with distinction,” said Justice Minister and Solicitor General Jonathan Denis. "I also thank Judge Pahl for his service to Albertans during his tenure as Assistant Chief Judge for the Edmonton region." Judge Pahl served as Assistant Chief Judge for the Edmonton region since May 2007. He was appointed to the Provincial Court of Alberta in January 2002 and will continue to serve as a full-time judge in the Edmonton region.

Backgrounder

Assistant Chief Judge biography

Judge Gardner graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor in Laws in 1978. Following graduation, he practiced law for 13 years with the Edmonton firm of Nickerson Roberts and Hilborn, with an emphasis on criminal and family law. In 1991 he became a partner in Birdsell Grant Gardner LLP in Stony Plain with a general practice focused on the areas of civil litigation, real estate, wills and estates and corporate law. Judge Gardner was appointed to the Edmonton Region Provincial Court in 2010. In addition to serving in various capacities with the Legal Aid Society of Alberta, the Legal Education Society of Alberta and with the Law Society of Alberta as a Bencher, he was a member of the board of directors of the Alberta Law Reform Institute, the Legal Resource Centre Ltd., and the Legal Archives Society.
