To support safe and reliable court services for Albertans, Alberta’s government has invested more than $6 million to make security upgrades at the Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Lethbridge, Drumheller, Fort McMurray, St. Paul, Pincher Creek, Alexis, Canmore and Cochrane courthouses.
The security improvements will improve building access, emergency systems, security technology and prisoner movement areas to help create a safer environment for court users, judiciary, staff, peace officers and members of the public.
“Albertans expect courthouses to be safe and secure spaces for everyone who works in, visits or relies on our justice system. These investments will help modernize security infrastructure and support the safe delivery of court services across the province.”
“Courthouses are essential public facilities that support Alberta’s justice system. These upgrades will modernize security infrastructure and help ensure courthouses remain safe, functional and able to serve Albertans for years to come.”
The provincewide initiative builds on recommendations from a 2023 planning study that identified security and health and safety improvements needed at courthouses across Alberta. Several security projects are currently in the design and procurement stages, with construction beginning or advancing this fiscal year. The security upgrades are anticipated to be completed in 2027.
“Courthouses must remain safe and secure areas where participants in the justice system are free of intimidation or threats. Consequently, courthouse security is essential to the rule of law. This investment in modern security measures will help ensure our courts remain safe, accessible and focused on their essential role in delivering justice.”
The improvements will address identified security risks, improve courthouse operations and help ensure Alberta’s justice system continues to serve communities across the province.
