The Alberta Satellite Rebate Program will help rural and remote households get online where ground-based broadband internet projects have not reached or are not currently underway or planned. Better internet means better access to education, health care and economic opportunities that come with being connected.
Rebate eligibility is based on federal broadband availability data, which identifies locations that lack high-speed internet and are not served by an active broadband expansion project. About 10,000 Alberta households fall into this category. For these households, satellite internet is often the most practical way to get connected.
“Satellite technology has changed what’s possible for rural connectivity, and this rebate makes sure cost isn’t what stands between rural Alberta households and getting online. We’ve made significant progress in ensuring Albertans across the province can benefit from connectivity, regardless of where they live, and this rebate will help the remaining households in our most remote, rural and sparsely populated areas get online.”
Households that qualify for the rebate program can purchase their satellite hardware and installation while the program is open, then submit their receipts through the program’s online portal to receive their rebate. Households can check their address at alberta.ca to see if they qualify and those that do not qualify for the program may be able to request a review through the online portal.
“Reliable internet access is essential for rural Albertans, and many households still face barriers to connectivity that existing federal and provincial initiatives have not been able to solve. The Alberta Satellite Rebate Program provides another pathway for those residents to get connected. The Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) welcomes this additional funding stream that seeks to bridge the gaps in existing government programs and connect more rural Albertans to high-speed internet.”
Building on the Alberta Broadband Strategy
The Alberta Satellite Rebate Program is part of the Alberta Broadband Strategy, which is bringing high-speed internet to every household in the province. Alberta’s government and the federal government have together committed $755 million to expand connectivity, with projects underway across the province.
Some households are in areas with low population density or challenging terrain, where satellite is the only current way to get them connected. The rebate program builds on the success of the Alberta Broadband Strategy by supporting these households directly.
