“I would like to congratulate Justice Thomas Rothwell on his appointment to the Court of Appeal of Alberta and Justice Malcolm Lavoie on his appointment to the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta.

“Both individuals bring significant legal experience, a deep understanding of our province and a strong record of service to Alberta’s justice system.

“Justice Thomas Rothwell served as law clerk to the Honourable Mr. Justice J.C. Major at the Supreme Court of Canada and was assistant deputy minister of the Legal Services Division at Alberta Justice prior to his appointment to the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta in 2020.

“Justice Malcolm Lavoie was appointed deputy minister of Justice and deputy attorney general of Alberta in 2024. He has argued several cases before the Supreme Court of Canada.

“Alberta’s government welcomes the federal government’s willingness to meaningfully collaborate on these judicial appointments. This constructive approach represents an important step forward for provincial involvement in future appointments to Alberta’s superior courts.

“The highest levels of Alberta’s justice system should reflect Albertans and the province they serve. We maintain that greater provincial involvement would strengthen public confidence in the administration of justice.

“Our government looks forward to continuing our collaboration with the federal government while hearing from Albertans about the future of judicial appointments in our province.”
