The funding will upgrade teaching and learning spaces, add student study and flex areas and provide new computers, sound systems, projectors and specialized digital equipment.
The investment comes shortly after Alberta Culture Days, which once again brought Albertans together to celebrate the arts, culture and creativity that enriches communities across the province. Over its 100-year history, AUArts has educated artists, designers and craftspeople, with more than 14,000 students attending the institution.
“For 100 years, AUArts has given students a unique place to learn, pursue their passions and drive creative industry in Alberta and beyond. Our government is proud to invest in its future and help ensure the next generation of artists and creators have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive over the next 100 years.”
“Following this year’s Alberta Culture Days celebrations, it’s fitting that we also mark AUArts’ centennial. For 100 years, this remarkable university has supported local artists, helped Alberta’s arts community grow and made a real difference across our province.”
AUArts is Alberta’s only stand-alone art, craft and design university and one of only four in Canada. Founded in 1926 as the Art Department at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art, the institution has grown into the university it is today.
“Over the past century, AUArts has been shaped by the creativity, passion and generosity of our community. This celebration brought that community together in a meaningful way and reminded us that the university's greatest strength has always been its people. As we look ahead, we are grateful to everyone who has helped build AUArts and excited about what the next generation of artists, designers and makers will create.”
AUArts is one of only three post-secondary institutions in Alberta to reach the 100-year milestone. Throughout its history, the institution has helped shape Alberta’s creative and cultural life, with graduates contributing to communities in Alberta and beyond.
