“Today marks the start of Alberta’s fourth annual Consent Awareness Week, an important part of our ongoing commitment to creating safer campuses and communities for everyone.
“This week, we are reminded of a difficult reality: the first six weeks of the academic semester are recognized as a high-risk period for sexual violence. That is why Consent Awareness Week takes place every third week of September, when students are beginning a new academic year. Raising awareness, encouraging conversations about consent and supporting prevention efforts are essential to ending sexual- and gender-based violence in Alberta.
“Ending sexual- and gender-based violence is not the work of one week, one campus or one government. It is a shared responsibility, and our government remains committed to working with our post-secondary institutions, community organizations and Albertans to create a safer future for everyone.”
Myles McDougall, Minister of Advanced Education
“Every Albertan deserves to live free from violence, harassment and fear. Recognizing Consent Awareness Week reflects our government's commitment to helping make that a reality.
“This week serves as an important reminder that consent is more than a conversation, it is the foundation of healthy relationships, safe communities and the mutual respect we all deserve.
“Through Alberta's 10-Year Strategy to End Gender-Based Violence, our government is working to support survivors, strengthen prevention efforts and foster a culture of consent across Alberta.
“Together, we can stand up for others, lead by example and help build an Alberta where everyone feels safe, supported and valued.”
Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women
