“Forests and the forestry industry are woven into Alberta’s identity and play a crucial role in our future. During National Forest Week, Alberta’s government is proud to recognize the many ways our forests support the province and to acknowledge the people, communities and industries that help care for them.
“More than half of Alberta, is covered by forested public land. These forests are where Albertans live, work and enjoy the outdoors. These areas are also working landscapes supporting more than 40,000 good jobs, creating opportunities for local businesses and helping sustain communities across the province.
“That is why sustainable forest management matters. It is about finding the right balance, using the resource wisely, renewing it properly and adjusting to changing conditions so our forests stay healthy and productive over the long haul.
“Beyond their economic value, forests provide wildlife habitat, protect watersheds and sustain healthy ecosystems. They are places where families camp, hike, hunt, fish and spend time together. For many Albertans, forests are part of cherished memories and traditions, and they remain an important part of our shared heritage.
“Protecting these forests is a responsibility we all share. That is why Alberta’s government launched the Alberta Wildfire Mitigation Strategy – a long-term approach to help reduce the negative impacts of wildfire on forests while helping protect homes, livelihoods and important infrastructure.
“The strategy uses active forest management tools to reduce the amount of dangerous forest fuels that have built up in our forests over the years and now pose a danger to our communities. Lasting progress depends on all of us: governments, industry, communities and Albertans. I am confident we can achieve these goals together.
“This National Forest Week, I encourage Albertans to get outside and experience the forests that contribute so much to who we are as a province. It is an opportunity to celebrate the landscapes that help define our province, support our communities, strengthen our way of life and contribute to Alberta’s future prosperity.”
