“On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we join communities across Alberta to raise awareness of elder abuse and reaffirm our shared responsibility to protect and support older adults. As Alberta’s senior population continues to grow, so does our commitment to ensure every older adult can live with dignity, respect and security.
“Elder abuse is a serious and often hidden issue that can take many forms, including emotional, physical and financial abuse, as well as neglect. It can have devastating impacts on a person’s health, well-being and sense of safety. However, too often, it goes unrecognized or unreported.
“Our government is working with community partners across Alberta to prevent abuse, strengthen supports and improve access to services for those affected. This includes a $4.2-million investment to enhance prevention and intervention efforts, expand shelter services and increase access to safe spaces for seniors in communities throughout the province.
“Preventing elder abuse is a shared responsibility. Families, friends, neighbors and community members all have an important role to play in recognizing the signs of abuse and helping connect people with support. By staying informed and looking out for one another, we can ensure no senior faces abuse in silence.
“If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. For information and support, the 24-hour Family Violence Info Line is available by phone or text at 310-1818. A full list of services and resources can be found at Elder abuse – Get help | Alberta.ca.
“Together, we can build a province where every senior feels safe, valued and supported.”
