Alberta continues to welcome investment that shows confidence in the province as the best place to do business. Bison Low Carbon Ventures has officially opened the Meadowbrook Carbon Storage Hub, a major milestone for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) development in Alberta.
Located near Legal in Sturgeon County, Phase 1 of the project is licensed to store up to 500 kilotonnes of CO2 per year, with plans to expand to at least 3 million tonnes annually. The storage hub represents an initial investment of approximately $17 million in private capital, with plans to grow to nearly $150 million in future phases. This will support long-term, sustainable growth across Alberta’s manufacturing and energy sectors while strengthening the province’s position as a global leader in carbon capture and storage.
“Investments like this showcase the confidence in Alberta as the best place to invest, grow and build. Alberta’s government is helping companies like Bison Low Carbon Ventures innovate and create good jobs while keeping Alberta competitive on the global stage.”
“Alberta is a global leader in carbon capture, utilization and storage technology, investment and implementation. Projects like the Meadowbrook Carbon Storage Hub play a key role in Alberta producing the most responsible oil and gas in the world.”
“Bringing the Meadowbrook Carbon Storage Hub into operation is a strong achievement for Bison, our partner PrairieSky, and our major investors Marubeni and Mizuho. It positions us to be able to offer a safe, cost effective and diversified carbon storage solution to both large Heartland area customers via pipeline, as well as supporting bespoke smaller projects via tractor trailer. We hope the backdrop in support of increased adoption of industrial CCS continues to improve, and we take aspects of the recent federal provincial accord as potentially very positive in that regard.”
Invest Alberta Corporation supported this project by providing ongoing support to Bison Low Carbon Ventures and engaging directly with the Marubeni Corporation team in Tokyo. The organization served as a key resource on Alberta’s carbon capture landscape and ensuring the companies could successfully navigate provincial regulations and advance their investment in Alberta.
“The opening of Meadowbrook shows that Alberta can turn CCUS ambition into real projects, real operations and real investment. Bison Low Carbon Ventures’ progress reflects the advantages companies find here: a competitive business environment, deep technical expertise and a regulatory framework that supports innovation at scale. Invest Alberta is proud to work alongside investors and project proponents who are choosing Alberta to build the next generation of low-carbon infrastructure.”
Projects like Meadowbrook show how Alberta is creating the conditions for long-term growth and continued private investment. As a cutting-edge, first-of-its-kind facility in Canada, the project highlights Alberta’s leadership in advancing innovative, investment-driven solutions for energy production.
