“Today marks the first day of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice – the largest Islamic holiday celebrated by Muslims in Alberta and around the world. This holiday also coincides with the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, which is a profound spiritual journey taken by millions of Muslims each year.

“On this blessed occasion, communities enjoy festive meals and unite in prayer to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command. Due to his willingness to sacrifice what was dear to him, God honoured both Ibrahim and his son, offering a ram to sacrifice instead.

“Eid al-Adha is a time to reflect on the values of generosity, love, sacrifice, compassion and devotion to faith. Celebrations are marked by reflection, gratitude and support for those in need.

“We extend our heartfelt wishes to all those celebrating. May the year ahead be one of many blessings.

“Eid al-Adha Mubarak.”
