To support the cross-government efforts of procurement modernization, the strategic procurement function, which includes Procurement Standards and Engagement and Category Management, is transferring from Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction to Executive Council.

The new Strategic Procurement Office will ensure taxpayer dollars are appropriately used. Mandatory training will empower teams to act with confidence, clarity and professionalism, backed by strong ethical standards and protections. This move strengthens alignment with government-wide priorities and enhances strategic oversight for procurement.

“The Strategic Procurement Office will strengthen how government delivers results for Albertans by enabling faster decision-making and helping ensure programs and services are delivered efficiently. By modernizing procurement and supporting public servants with clear oversight, this office reinforces our responsibility as stewards of public funds.”

Dale McFee, Deputy Minister of Executive Council

Modern tools, including secure digital platforms, e-signatures and advanced management systems, will streamline how staff and suppliers conduct business with government. These improvements will reduce administrative burden, accelerate service delivery, and create stronger safeguards that protect data and enhance accountability. Together, they will support a future-ready procurement system that is efficient, resilient and innovative.

The new office will increase transparency and help Albertans see how decisions are made and why they matter. The Strategic Procurement Office will be operational by April 1.
