With the $151-million expansion project completed in December 2025, crews are now outfitting the new spaces with furniture, equipment and other clinical tools. As each area is furnished over the coming months, Alberta Health Services will begin opening the spaces to patients, increasing access to emergency and specialized care in Calgary.

Minister Long and Minister Jones join Terri Roth, ED Unit Manager; Brock Love, ED Unit Manager; Lydia Megraw, Executive Director; Maria Vera, ED Patient Care Manager; and Site Medical Director Dr. Meghan Vlasschaert for a key handover at the Peter Lougheed Centre.

“Albertans expect a health care system they can rely on, and strong infrastructure is part of delivering this. The investment at Peter Lougheed Centre adds capacity, improves patient flow and gives health care teams the modern, well-designed spaces they need to best care for patients.”

Martin Long, Minister of Infrastructure

This expansion strengthens Calgary’s health system by improving patient flow, reducing crowding and creating modern clinical environments that support both patients and front-line health care workers.

“Completing this expansion represents a significant increase in capacity in Calgary and will help ensure more Albertans receive the care they need in a timely manner.”

Matt Jones, Minister of Hospitals and Surgical Health Services

Alberta’s government continues to invest in front-line capacity and modern health care facilities so families can access timely, high-quality care closer to home. The completion of Phase 2 at the Peter Lougheed Centre ensures patients can receive emergency and specialized services when and where they need them most.

“This expanded emergency department gives every physician, nurse and staff member the environment they need to deliver exceptional care when seconds truly matter, and every improvement in this space translates directly into better experiences and outcomes for our patients.”

Dr. Meghan Vlasschaert, medical director, Peter Lougheed Centre.

“With this expansion, our clinical teams will have the space they need to provide safer and more coordinated emergency care. It strengthens our ability to respond to the most critical moments with precision and compassion, and reflects our commitment to investing in our patients, and creating spaces that keep our community healthy and supported.”

Nicholas Thain, senior operating officer, Peter Lougheed Centre, Alberta Kidney Care (AKC) South and Southern Alberta Transplant Program (ALTRA)

“When we invest in the right health care infrastructure, patients feel it, families see it, and care teams experience it every day. This expansion reflects a thoughtful design that enhances comfort for patients and families, while giving our teams the environment they need to deliver innovative, patient-centred emergency care.”

Lydia Megraw, executive director, Peter Lougheed Centre

Through targeted infrastructure projects, Alberta’s government is strengthening health care service delivery and emergency department capacity to build a stronger, more resilient health system that meets the needs of Albertans today and for generations to come.
