“Since 1999, Alberta’s government has recognized International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day.

“FASD is a lifelong disability that affects individuals who were exposed to alcohol in the womb. It has a profound impact on the lives of individuals with FASD, their families, caregivers and communities, yet it is preventable.

“There is no safe time, kind or amount of alcohol to consume during pregnancy.

“Alberta’s response to FASD has made us an international leader in the field, and it’s thanks to the many dedicated caregivers and organizations that support individuals with FASD. In addition, Alberta’s FASD Networks play a key role in raising awareness to improve prevention, diagnosis and supports for individuals with FASD.

“I encourage Albertans to recognize the unique talents, strengths and abilities of individuals living with FASD, whose contributions play an important role in our communities. We all have a role to play in creating a society that supports individuals with FASD and promotes healthy pregnancies. Please join me in recognizing International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Awareness Day and increasing awareness of this preventable disorder.”
