Alberta continues to lead housing construction in Canada, according to a recent report by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Data from CMHC shows that Alberta continues to be on track to surpass its 2024 record-setting year with 27,902 housing starts in the first two quarters of 2025. This is a 30 per cent increase compared to last year’s impressive statistics and outpaces development in every other province. Despite making up less than 13 per cent of Canada’s population, Alberta built nearly a quarter of all housing starts in the country in the first half of 2025.

As more people than ever before call Alberta home, it is critical to keep up with housing demand. That is why the province has been working to break down barriers and empower its housing partners to get more shovels in the ground faster, and the numbers show that Alberta’s efforts are working.

“Alberta’s record housing starts are a clear sign that our approach is working. While other jurisdictions are falling behind, Alberta continues to step up – leading the way in housing construction, cutting red tape and delivering results that matter. This is what it looks like when a government does what it takes to get shovels in the ground and homes built.”

Jason Nixon, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services

Both Calgary and Edmonton continue to be on course to break the records set last year with year-to-date housing starts increasing 32 per cent and 29 per cent, respectively. Housing construction in Alberta’s mid-sized cities continues to be strong this year compared to 2024, with a 26 per cent increase in Lethbridge, a 112 per cent increase in Grande Prairie and a two per cent increase in Red Deer.

Alberta’s builders and developers continue to respond to population growth and demand in the rental sector, with 48 per cent of all new housing starts being rentals. There are currently 21,735 rental units under construction across Alberta.

“Alberta continues to lead the country in new housing starts, with nearly 28,000 homes underway in the first half of 2025 – a more than 30 per cent increase over last year’s record pace. This sustained momentum highlights the continued collaboration between industry, the provincial government, and municipalities in reducing barriers and supporting housing affordability.”

Alberta’s efforts to cut red tape through the Stop Housing Delays portal, its support of innovative housing strategies and its investment-friendly, low-tax environment has incentivized housing construction provincewide. By taking action to increase the housing supply, Alberta’s government is driving down housing costs and addressing the housing shortage as more people call Alberta home.
