Alberta’s government is committed to ensuring vulnerable and low-income Albertans have access to a roof over their head and a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home – and Alberta’s housing providers are a key part of that commitment.
Budget 2024 commits an increase of $21 million in operating funding to Alberta’s housing providers, which means they will receive a total of $75 million in 2024-25. This funding will keep units open and help cover rising day-to-day expenses such as utilities, supplies and staffing.
“Housing providers are the backbone of Alberta’s affordable housing system, and our government is firmly in their corner. More people are coming to our province than ever before, and through Budget 2024 we are helping to ensure low-income individuals and families can have a safe place to call home.”
More than 110,000 Albertans currently live in more than 60,000 government-subsidized homes, and with the cost of living rising, demand is rapidly growing.
Affordable housing providers across the province do critical work to ensure low-income Albertans have access to safe, stable, affordable homes that meet their needs. Alberta’s government is committed to helping these providers mitigate rising costs and inflationary pressures so they can continue to help low-income Albertans find the homes they need in communities across the province.

As an affordable housing provider, these additional resources will have a direct and positive impact on the quality of life of the over 15,000 individuals and families living in Civida homes, allowing us to better address inflationary pressures, maintain and renew much-needed affordable homes and sustain our service delivery.”

Budget 2024 is a responsible plan to strengthen health care and education, build safe and supportive communities, manage the province’s resources wisely and promote job creation to continue to build Alberta’s competitive advantage.

- Community Housing is defined as a mix of single-family homes, apartments and townhomes, where the rent is based on 30 per cent of household income. Currently, this program prioritizes low-income households with dependents and less than $25,000 in assets.
