As the province’s population continues to grow, Alberta’s government remains focused on ensuring that more housing units are built in communities across the province. In 2023, Alberta’s government broke ground on or opened affordable and supportive housing in six communities, so more than 400 Alberta households have a safe and comfortable place to return to each day.

To continue ensuring low-income Albertans have access to safe and stable housing that meets their needs, a $10.2 million investment will build new, permanent supportive housing units in Lethbridge to ensure those experiencing homelessness have a safe place to call home.

“I am proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of Lethbridge Housing Authority’s new, permanent supportive housing facility. Supportive housing ensures those most vulnerable in our community have access to safe, stable place to call home while they receive the supports and services they need. We will continue to work with our partners to develop innovative housing solutions that meet community needs.”

Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services

Construction will begin this spring and, when complete, the facility will provide 30 units of permanent supportive housing for adults experiencing homelessness and who live with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. This is the third supportive housing project funded by government since 2021 specifically for Albertans who require additional social supports alongside housing to get back on their feet.

This project is a joint initiative between the Government of Alberta, the City of Lethbridge and the Lethbridge Housing Authority. In addition, the funding for this project is eligible for federal cost-matching under the National Housing Strategy bilateral agreement.

“Ensuring Albertans have access to safe and affordable housing is a top priority for our government. I am pleased to see how Alberta’s government is helping Lethbridge’s vulnerable population by providing them with a safe place to call home while they receive the supports they need.”

Nathan Neudorf, MLA for Lethbridge-East

“The groundbreaking of this permanent supportive housing complex signifies a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to address homelessness and support those in need in our community. I would like to extend gratitude to the Government of Alberta for their contribution of $10.2 million towards this vital project. Together we are building a more compassionate and inclusive future for all residents of Lethbridge.”

Blaine Hyggen, mayor of Lethbridge

“Lethbridge Housing is thrilled to break ground on our 30-unit permanent supportive housing complex. The first of its kind to be built in Lethbridge, this complex will provide residents with stable, recovery oriented, supportive housing. We thank the Government of Alberta for their ongoing commitment to improving the lives of those in need in our community.”
