“On January 5, Sikhs in Alberta and around the world join together and celebrate Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th guru of the Sikh faith.

“Born in 1666, Guru Gobind Singh Ji was a spiritual leader, poet, philosopher and warrior. His enduring legacy includes establishing the community of baptized Sikhs, known as the Khalsa, on Vaisakhi Day in 1699.

“To mark the occasion, Sikhs gather at gurdwaras across Alberta to pray, sing traditional hymns and reflect on the enduring teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji – to speak truth, pursue justice and fight for equality. These values not only inform the daily lives of all Sikhs, they are fundamental to who we are as Albertans.

“I invite all Albertans to join me in expressing my best wishes to everyone celebrating the birth of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

“Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.”
