“On Proclamation Day, we remember the important partnership Alberta’s government has with the eight Metis Settlements and the Metis Settlements General Council.

“We celebrate our accomplishments together and the more than 30 years since the landmark legislation that helped set out a system of governance for Metis Settlements in Alberta.

“Remarkable events are happening in the Settlements, including the recent historic investment in seven Enbridge-owned energy assets involving multiple Metis Settlements. In addition, we have seen Aboriginal Business Investment Fund grants spur development at Kikino Metis Settlement’s Silver Birch Resort and Campground and improve Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement’s rodeo grounds. We are proud to witness and be part of this economic evolution.

“Since passing the Metis Settlements Act, Métis people have had a dedicated land base of 1.25 million acres in central and northern Alberta to preserve and enhance self-governance and a Me?tis way of life.

“Alberta’s government honours this day by raising the Metis Settlements General Council flag at the Alberta legislature to celebrate our shared history and continued relationship.”
