“Thrombosis is a serious health condition where a blood clot forms in a blood vessel. This clot can slow or block normal blood flow, and sometimes travels to other parts of the body. This can result in cardiovascular emergencies such as pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke.

“Symptoms of thrombosis can vary according to which part of the body has been affected and can include unexplained shortness of breath, chest pain, pain in the calf, swelling of the ankle or foot, a rapid heart rate or even loss of consciousness.

“Knowing the signs of thrombosis is especially important for individuals who have had long hospital stays, surgeries, or who haven’t moved for long periods of time due to bed rest or long-haul travel. If you are experiencing symptoms of thrombosis, you should seek immediate medical attention.

“The good news is that thrombosis can be prevented in various ways. Having a discussion with your health-care professional can help identify what methods are best for you.

“Please join me in marking World Thrombosis Day on Oct. 13. The more that Albertans know about the risks and signs of thrombosis, the more we can stop this potentially life-threatening condition.”
