“I’m pleased to recognize the AFA Art Collection for 50 years of supporting the arts in our province with passion and professionalism.

“In 1972, the province set aside $50,000 to purchase works of art from Alberta artists. Today, between the AFA’s acquisition programs and generous contributions from donors, it has become one of the strongest, most active provincial art collections in Canada.

“I am thrilled to celebrate this milestone during Month of the Artist in Alberta. The work of artists grounds us, captures our imagination and inspires us to leave our own mark in this province. Art dares us to look beyond our own horizon, to look at the world through someone else’s eyes.

“I thank all generations of art lovers, art curators, donors of art, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and, most emphatically, the artists themselves. Alberta’s art collection reflects our unique identity as a people, and I am so proud of that. Your work and passion help make Albertans proud of our rich history and heritage.

“Each piece in the collection tells part of Alberta’s story. You can find images of the collection online or experience the art through the Travelling Exhibition program and at major exhibitions. See how the foundation is celebrating this milestone at affta.ab.ca/collection.

“I hope everyone explores these works of art collected over the past 50 years. My sincere congratulations to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for reaching this milestone with this collection. You are an admirable steward for this and other collections, making sure that the artistic legacy of this province is preserved and exhibited for new viewers to appreciate. May our collection of Alberta art continue to flourish and grow.”
