“Albertans of Ukrainian heritage have made a significant impact on our province with contributions that range from business and industry to academia to public service to culture and sports.

“This legacy began in 1891 when the first immigrants from Ukraine arrived in Alberta. The number of people living in Alberta who are Ukrainian or of Ukrainian descent is now more than 360,000, showing just how important this cultural group has been to the growth and development of Alberta.

“Ukrainian-Canadian Heritage Day this year has a sombre shade to it in the shadow of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. So today we raise the Ukrainian flag not only to celebrate Ukrainian-Canadians’ contributions but also to express our province’s solidarity with the people of Ukraine and with all Albertans of Ukrainian heritage.”
