“World Blood Donor Day raises awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion and recognizes the selfless contribution of donors who save and change the lives of strangers every day.

“More than 75,000 Albertans actively donate this life-saving resource every year. These small acts of generosity truly save lives. Every 60 seconds, someone in Canada needs blood. About 50 per cent of Canadians are eligible to donate and only four per cent donate regularly.

“Thank you to every Albertan who takes the time to provide blood and plasma products. From emergency departments to operating rooms, to research and producing treatments for rare diseases, none of this life-saving work is possible without the valuable gift from individuals who give blood and plasma. It is truly a humanitarian act of kindness.

“Canada’s blood supply is down by 25 per cent since April. The need for donors does not end today, tomorrow or next year. It never ends. Please consider becoming a donor, or donating again, by contacting Canadian Blood Services online or by calling 1-888-236-6283.

“Sharing blood means sharing life and giving hope to patients and their loved ones. You never know whose life you’ll change or save. Your donation matters.”
