“National Health and Fitness Day was created to raise awareness of the significant benefits of physical activity and to encourage Canadians to increase their participation in recreational sports and fitness activities.

Staying active is one of the best things we can do for our physical and mental health. Physical activity benefits our lifelong health and well-being and helps us have more energy for the things we need to do and the things we enjoy doing. Regular exercise also improves sleep, the ability to manage stress and keeps one’s mind alert.

“Maintaining good health is important for everyone. Physical activity benefits your heart, lungs, bones and more, and lowers your risk of developing many health problems – reducing the burden of illness on families and the health-care system.

“Make a move to get active. You don’t have to be an athlete to improve your level of fitness. If you need help getting started, check out Prescription to Get Active, a program available across the province. Your health care provider will prescribe you physical activity and provide you with temporary free or discounted access to recreation facilities.

“The benefits of fitness and exercise can be realized at any age, no matter your current condition. Make every day your health and fitness day.”
